"Mother-in-Law" by Ernie K-Doe

Not quite a novelty tune, "Mother-in-Law" made its debut at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending April 2, 1961.  It spent 14 weeks on the chart, 8 of them in the top ten, and 1 week at #1.

55, 23, 9, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2,  1, 5, 19, 22, 28, 46.  (Bold red indicates a Star Performer, i.e., selections  registering greatest upward progress.)

Ernie can be considered a 'hall-of-fame' member of the One-Hit Wonders, though, surprisingly, "Mother-in-Law" doesn't make the top 100 here.  (And -- whoa -- it's not even listed here.)  His 4 follow-up songs spent a total of 15 weeks on the Hot 100, with "Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta" flaming out at 53

At the website Digital Dream Door, "Mother-in-Law" is listed as the 17th most popular song of 1961.

  1. He took the money from the song and opened a bar on Claiborne Street in Treme. I have heard that the bar has ceased operations, but the building and signs are still there.
